Basically sapient brown bears. They've got more expressive faces than real world bears, and tend to be more group social as well.
A close human variant from a colony ship that got lost and settled in with locals of the planet Tearoa. By the time the planet was discovered by the wider galaxy, both the original Tearoa and humans died out due to two separate diseases, the humans first, then the Tearoa. The mixed children had it a greater resistance to both diseases. The two species had managed to have children due to a combination of occasional cases of unlikely fertility and wider scale deliberate engineering for parents of different species, and they'd mutually assimilated to each others' culture. The Tearoa were tridirectional sequential hermaphrodites *(using the term from wikipedia because I'm referencing a specific phenomena and I'm not really sure intersex works here) with a carrying, transmitting, and neutral body states. Due to this, they have very few secondary sex characteristics, and when they stated going at it with humans, they tended to go for those humans who were androgynous due to cultural definitions of beauty. The mixed children who eventually came to be the only inhabitants of the planet tended to look like highly androgynous humans with darker brown skin, fox-red/orange or dark green hair, and purple eyes, and the Tearoa tridirectional sequential hermaphroditism.
